Did you know that the first thing that Petr Janda (81), the legend of the Czech and international music scene, packs for a holiday is a guitar? We spoke to him about travel and his repeated visits to Paris, as well as about the innovations at his Penzion Nivy and his plans for 2024.
You are the frontman of the band Olympic, a legend, but you are also very active in other projects. What are you currently working on?
I am currently preparing a new album, the programme for next year, and most of all taking care of my family. The girls are older now and they need me.
How would you evaluate your record-breaking attendance at foreign concerts for compatriots, which you managed to achieve this year?
I had five concerts in February and March. In Miami, Sarasota, Washington, New Jersey and New York. All except Miami were sold out.
Rumour has it that this year’s 60th anniversary Olympic concerts will be replaced by the Trilogy project next year…
Yes, it’s true. It refers to the programme which is composed of three essential albums from the early '80s – Prázdniny na Zemi (Holidays on Earth), Ulice (Street) and Laboratoř (Laboratory).
You are a phenomenal guitarist. It is reputed that you practise every day. So also even on holiday?
I always take a guitar with me, it’s actually the first item I pack. Now I have a new, collapsible one, but I only take it when I don’t have a concert at my destination.
Do you encourage your two youngest daughters in music, or do they have completely different interests?
Yes, but it takes work. They both play the piano, but I can’t say that they are keen on it. I have to push them a lot, but we manage. The youngest, Rozárka, took up the guitar, and that made me really happy.
Can we look forward to any innovations at your Penzion Nivy in 2024?
Sure. We are restoring a smokehouse and a cellar that is over 100 years old, from which there will be an openly accessible wine bar, albeit without staff. We have a new road and a parking lot and our guests really like it.
I’ve heard that you like to return to Paris.
What draws you repeatedly to the French capital?
Paris is my favourite city. My whole family loves it. We have been there four times during this year.
Your pleasures include red wine, sushi and tennis. What else would you add?
I like to play the Matrimony card game and I love football, I’ve been a big fan of Bohemians since I was young. I really don’t have time for anything else.
Perhaps each of us is affected by the captivating pre-Christmas atmosphere, candlelit Advent evenings, the aroma of sweets, mulled wine, potpourri, fragrant frankincense and the beauty of glittering decorations on the Christmas tree. Every year, adults and children alike eagerly await the arrival of Infant Jesus and experience the joy of gifts. And it is no different in Karlovy Vary…
The mountainous region of South Tyrol is endowed with extraordinary natural beauty. Despite the harsh climate, local residents literally fell in love with it. Proof of this is the exclusive estate of Ansitz Steinbock. It provides a beautiful view of the surroundings, a warm atmosphere filled with the friendliness of the owner, Elisabeth Rabensteiner, as well as cuisine renowned throughout the region.
Sweet and salt have always gone well together. The taste of salty spring water and sweet crispy wafers has become synonymous with Karlovy Vary. In many ways, life in the famous spa town can be likened to these opposites. Accept the salty-sweet invitation to a walk through the town, which since 2021 has been proud to be registered on the prestigious UNESCO list.
