East Tyrol, which has long been considered the Cinderella of Tyrol, is definitely worth a visit. If only because it is not overcrowded with tourists. The Germans don’t have it within striking distance and therefore prefer the closer winter resorts around Salzburg or Innsbruck, and the Dutch and Scandinavians don’t have an airport there.
East Tyrol, which is located south of the Hohe Tauern between Großglockner and Großvenediger, attracts a growing number of visitors, due to its grandiose location with more than 200 three-thousander ski slopes, as well as the increasingly interesting choice of skiing offers.
Fantastic Atmosphere – No Waiting for Lifts
This is truly a local speciality that has become a rarity in other Alpine ski resorts: stress-free skiing, without waiting, without queues of cars on access roads and without the tedious search for a parking space. Skiing here still holds its natural charm and the ski huts retain their original atmosphere.
SkiHit Osttirol
The offer of the SkiHit Osttirol Ski Pass is appealing for "eaters of ski kilometres". It can be used in the following ski areas: Kals Matrei/Grossglockner Resort, Skizentrum Hochpustertal Sillian, Skizentrum St. Jakob in the Defereggental Valley, Mallnitz Ankogel resort and the Mölltaler Glacier. A total of 150 km of slopes of all levels of difficulty. In addition, a glacier is not missing here.
Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei
Here, the visitor finds himself in the Hohe Tauern National Park, directly in front of the spectacular backdrop of Austria’s highest peak, Großglockner. The Glocknerblick mountain peak is an unforgettable experience, as is the highest mountain, Cimaroß (2 621 m), accessible by cable car. Local attractions also include the 11.3-kilometre ski slope that ends in Matrei.
It is Best to Stay Right at the Slopes
When staying at the Gradonna Mountain Resort at an altitude of 1 350 metres, there is no need to worry about any transfers, ski buses or parking. Because this resort is directly at the Großglockner Kals-Matrei ski area slopes. In the morning, skiers can click on their skis and then take them off again virtually in their bedrooms. By the way, the bedrooms are constructed of limbo wood, which is a special type of pine with a strong aroma. So one does not merely fall asleep, but literally falls into limbo. Guests can stay in a 4-star Superior hotel with a spacious wellness area on an area of 3 000 square metres or in one of the 42 exclusive chalets with private spas. Guests staying in the chalets can of course use both restaurants. A Children’s Club is also available, for children from 3 years of age, with professional supervision 12 hours a day.
Hochpustertal Ski Centre
The Hochpustertal valley is located a short drive from Kals. It does not only belong to East Tyrol, which has to share this beautiful valley with South Tyrol. Above the resort, the area offers 22.4 kilometres of slopes that lead up to an altitude of 2 400 metres. Freeriders and snowboarders will also enjoy themselves here. For children, the Bobo Kinderland children’s area is available.
Dolomiten Residenz Sporthotel Sillian
Dolomiten Residenz Sporthotel Sillian is located just 170 metres from the ski area at an altitude of 1 100 metres. Thanks to its great location right at the entrance to the ski area, cosy accommodation and excellent services, the hotel is regularly highly rated by the European tourist portal, HolidayCheck.
Vitalresidenz Schloss Heinfels
Guests can jump directly from the slopes into the pool in the spacious 3 000-square-metre wellness area of Vitalresidenz Schloss Heinfels and relax their tired bodies after a hard day on the slopes. Here one finds a heated indoor and outdoor pool, saunas, a steam bath and spaciously designed restrooms.
