Mariánské Lázně is a renowned venue for relief from many health problems. Sometimes, however, its positive influence on the psychological side of clients and on treatment programmes that provide relief from the diseases of civilisation is forgotten. Head Physician at Nové Lázně, a hotel in the Ensana Hotels group, MUDr. PhD. Markéta Hovorková, confirms that a stay in Mariánské Lázně really has many beneficial aspects.
What led you to study Medicine?
I was born into a family of two doctors, and following in their footsteps seemed natural and logical to me, even if at first my decision did not meet with their support, because a doctor is actually an eternal student. However, when I came up with the fact that I wanted to be an astronaut, they preferred to accept my original choice.
As the capital, Prague offers many opportunities for doctors to quickly advance their careers. But you chose Mariánské Lázně. What was the appeal of this town for you?
There are more opportunities in Prague, but building a successful career is not easy. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, I worked for a year at the Internal Medicine Clinic of the Central Military Hospital in Prague as a junior doctor. After a year, I was accepted as a supervising physician in the Preventive Cardiology Department of IKEM, where I achieved certification in Internal Medicine and Diabetology, and became an independent specialist. It was a challenging period. When I was appointed to the position of Deputy-Head after 10 years, I still needed to prove my knowledge in the scientific field and achieved the title of PhD. Working in Prague was an incredible experience for me. But there came a time when I realised that I needed to return home. I had spent a wonderful childhood in Mariánky. In short, I belong here.
Each spa focuses on the treatment of certain diseases thanks to natural sources and specific therapies. Which of these will clients find to provide relief in Mariánské Lázně?
Unlike other Czech spas, Mariánské Lázně is unique in that it has a total of three natural healing springs. They are mineral springs, Maria's gas and peloids. Now we are also trying to obtain the prestigious status of a climatic spa. A large group of our clients are patients with chronic kidney diseases, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, circulatory and digestive systems. Recently, the number of clients with oncological diseases, respiratory diseases, and diseases caused by an unhealthy lifestyle has also been increasing.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, new symptoms of health deterioration appeared. Can staying in Mariánské Lázně help people with post-COVID syndrome?
It's already helping! We use our natural healing resources to alleviate post-COVID symptoms, such as general weakness, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, digestive problems. Then we use physical and rehabilitation treatment to improve the mental and physical condition and to improve immunity. Thanks to modern devices and new methodologies, we can alleviate joint and muscle pain and hair loss. A modern laser contributes to the improvement of lung tissue function, and our already mentioned foothill climate significantly helps to relieve coughs and shortness of breath. We were one of the first to conduct a study that objectively demonstrated that, after completing complex spa rehabilitation treatment in Mariánské Lázně, post-COVID complications, especially lung function, improved significantly in patients who had experienced severe COVID-19. For this study, we even received the 2021 ESPA Innovation Award from the European Spas Association for International Medical Research.
In addition to the pandemic, the modern age also brings about many other challenges to the spa industry, such as the diseases of civilisation. Are there treatment programmes in this area as well?
Of course. There are many diseases of civilisation, for example, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression. They arise as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle. In Mariánské Lázně, for example, we created a special preventive programme for people with a high risk of cardiovascular disease. This programme includes, among other things, our new modern Five Konzept rehabilitation method. This is a form of active stretching that effectively assists people with significant back pain caused by sedentary work, insufficient movement and long-term stress.
We keep talking about improving physical health, but what about mental well-being? What can Mariánské Lázně offer to improve mental health?
The goal of spa treatment is not only to improve the physical condition, the return to normal life and to speed up regeneration, but also mental health. Just the fact that you find yourself in a classy spa location without daily work or family responsibilities contributes to mental health during treatment. In addition, we are now preparing special De-Stress and Healthy Aging programmes that focus specifically on mental well-being. The goal is not only physical recovery, but it is also important to improve the quality of life. Through various studies and projects, we strive to ensure that spa treatment is an integral part of complex patient care and is also perceived as a prophylactic tool.
