Courage to Move Forward
JAN NEVESELÝ
Director of Royal Regent Hotel in Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary is a famous spa town with many hotels. One of these is found right in the centre near the colonnades and yet in a quiet location. It is called the Royal Regent and is one of the popular hotels. It has been successfully managed by Jan Neveselý for many years. Like a good housekeeper, he is an important support for the hotel, which is also evident from its anniversary this year. At the beginning of the spa season, he gave us his time and, among other things, told us that the hotel is preparing for one more anniversary next year and in grand style – a brand new part of the hotel will be opened.

This year you are celebrating a special anniversary – 10 years in the management role of the hotel. Comparing your first year in office and now, has there been any change at the Royal Regent over the years?

The first year was focused on stabilising the hotel and setting rules for its efficient operation. We keep trying to avoid 'operational blindness' and constantly develop our hotel. Which is being successful, and thus we are among the top spa hotels in Karlovy Vary. My 10 years at the hotel have been a beautiful period in my professional life. A decade full of twists and turns, normal, but also unusual decisions. Every year has differed in some way, but always filled with the effort to find the right course and the courage to go forward. The current operation of the hotel proves that our direction is correct.

What do you think is most valuable in your hotel?

Definitely the colleagues in all professions who take care of the comfort of our guests. Whether they are those that guests meet every day, or those that are unseen, but are necessary for the hotel operations. I thank them sincerely for their daily work. A big 'thank you' also goes to the owner for his great trust in our hotel and in me as well, for the inspiring conversations we have together that advance the hotel.

If you could not be a Director, but instead could choose one of the professions that are important for the running of the hotel, which one would it be and why?

The closest to me is definitely the catering section. Of course, in the back of my mind I always wanted to lead and I am happy that I have fulfilled my dream. Thanks to the right decisions at the right time, I have been in the position of Director for 20 years, including 10 years at the Royal Regent Hotel.

The Royal Regent Hotel is now expanding with another part. When will it be ready and what will make it attractive to guests?

In the new part, which will be connected to the existing hotel, we will offer guests 32 new designer bedrooms already by the middle of next year. These will be air-conditioned and modernly equipped. Guests can also look forward to extended spa services, a salt cave, private wellness facilities and other additional services. Since we plan to complete the construction around the time of our 15th anniversary, everything has a very celebratory feel to it.

People go to the spa for treatment. But what about healthy visitors to Karlovy Vary? Which of your stay packages would you recommend to them? Do you have something like that as well?

Our domain is treatment programmes. However, we believe that even an apparently healthy guest can strengthen his or her health by prevention. Among wellness and relaxation stays, women prefer the popular Wellness Cleopatra and Wellness Anti-cellulite. Gentlemen, on the other hand, like to choose the Saint Joseph Wellness Package. The Wellness Thai Package, which combines Thai massages with baths and oxygen therapy, is also tempting. Guests also have unlimited access to the hotel's fitness centre and wellness centre with a swimming pool, whirlpool and 3 types of saunas.

Your hotel is located at a very good address, in the spa centre. Can random passers-by from the promenade who are not staying in your hotel, visit you? What can Royal Regent offer them?

People walking around the town centre can spend pleasant moments in our hotel, for example in the Regent's Club lobby bar, where we have a selection of courses on the á la carte menu. They can also enjoy a pleasant time with a cup of good coffee or tea and a sweet treat from our master confectioner. Or relish one of the delicious cocktails. For guests who would like to use only the treatment options at our hotel, our Spa Doctor will prepare an individual treatment plan upon agreement, and the guest only comes in for the treatment.

Karlovy Vary is beautiful in every season. However, summer plays a prime role, perhaps also because of the Film Festival. What else can your guests experience in the famous spa town during the warm months?

Karlovy Vary has a rich cultural life. In addition to the aforementioned Film Festival,  numerous concerts of various genres are held. One of the concerts of the traditional Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra, or one of the performances in the Theatre, is definitely worth a visit. St. Joseph Royal Regent (moreover, as the only hotel in Karlovy Vary!) even has its own lodge in the Municipal Theatre. Walking through the beautiful and well-maintained spa parks and forests, where cyclists can also take advantage of kilometres of groomed cycle paths, is a very popular exercise activity. And in case the weather is bad, indoor exhibitions are open, such as an interactive tour of Becher's Villa, or a sightseeing excursion to the newly renovated Imperial Baths.
