Taste the Best Barbera Wines

Italy is rightly considered the cradle of winemaking. Among its treasures is the blue Barbera variety – a wine with higher acidity, pleasant roundness and the rich tones of dark ripe fruit, such as plums or cherries. Its harmonious and delicate taste is gaining more and more fans. It originates in the Piedmont region in the northwest of the country, where it has deep roots and has enjoyed growing popularity in recent decades.

Barbera is today one of the most widespread varieties in the Piedmont region, where it covers almost one-half of the vineyards. The south-facing slopes and calcareous soil provide winemakers with ideal conditions for its cultivation. Many winemakers allow the wine to mature in oak barrels, thereby emphasising its fullness and richness of flavour. Víno Pro Vás importer offers seven wines of the Barbera variety, which have excelled in the Grand Test of the prestigious Wine & Degustation magazine – three of them were even winners in their categories. Taste the gems of Italian wineries!

Boeri Alfonso: Respect for Tradition and Nature

The best-rated wine across all categories was the Barbera d’Asti Superiore Pörlapa 2019 DOCG from the Boeri Alfonso family winery. This winery, founded in Piedmont in 1936, has been passed down from generation to generation. Its philosophy is based on a respect for Nature – winemakers avoid pesticides, use only organic fertilisers and do not irrigate their vineyards.

Vinory: A winemaking dream come true

The gold medal in the Nizza DOCG category was won by Nizza Bricco 2020 DOCG from the Vinory winery, located in the town of Nizza Monferrato in Piedmont. Its founder, Norwegian Andre Sperre, fulfilled his dream in Italy and joined forces with top local winemakers. Vinory was founded on the foundations of the La Mandragola winery. It gradually expanded its vineyards from 3.5 to the current 12 hectares. Their pride is precisely the wines of the Barbera variety in the prestigious Nizza DOCG denomination.

La Colombera: Family heritage in the hands of a female winemaker

In the Barbera category, apart from the classic denominations, the jury was most impressed by the Elisa Barbera 2017, Colli Tortonesi DOC wine from La Colombera winery. This winery is run by Elisa Semino, nicknamed the "Queen of Timorasso", after whom the wine is named. The history of the winery, located near the commune of Tortona, dates back to 1937, when the grandfather of the current owner settled on the Cascina Colombera estate. It currently manages approximately 22 hectares of vineyards.
